Privacy Policy
This policy covers the Android app Roona: Setswana Dictionary (the app) and the website roona.io (the site).
Last updated:
Who we are
The app and the site are provided by Dangling Pointers SIA ("we", "us"), a company registered in Latvia, 14B-57 Ropazu iela, Riga, LV-1039, Latvia. We are the controller of the personal data described here under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). For any question about this policy or your data, write to hello@roona.io.
In short
- The dictionary works offline. There is no account and no sign-in, and we never ask for your name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos or location.
- The text you type into search is never sent. The app does report which dictionary entries and phrase topics you open (see below).
- The app uses three services from other companies: Amplitude for usage statistics, Sentry for crash reports and AppsFlyer to measure which campaign or store listing led to an install. Each is described below.
- You can turn usage statistics and install attribution off in the app: Settings > Privacy > Share usage statistics.
- Developer and test builds of the app send nothing.
- We do not sell your data. The app shows no ads.
- The site sets no cookies and runs no analytics or trackers.
What the app collects
Usage statistics (Amplitude)
To learn which parts of the app are used and what to improve, the app sends events to Amplitude:
- app opens and sessions;
- which screen was viewed: Dictionary, Phrases or Settings;
- that a search was made, with the number of results and the length of the query. The search text itself is not sent;
- which dictionary entry was opened, that is, its headword (for example, ngwana), which is public dictionary content;
- which phrase topic was opened, and taps on links in Settings;
- device model, Android version and app version;
- the country you are in, which Amplitude derives from the IP address of the request;
- an install ID: a random identifier the app creates when it is first run. It is not linked to your name or to any account, and it changes if you clear the app's data or reinstall the app.
Crash and error reports (Sentry)
When the app crashes or hits an error, it sends a report to Sentry so that we can fix the problem. A report contains the technical details of the error (the stack trace), the device model, Android version and app version. The app's option to attach personal data to reports is switched off, and reports do not contain your searches or any other personal content. Crash reports are sent even when usage statistics are turned off, because without them we cannot fix errors.
Install attribution (AppsFlyer)
To measure our marketing, the app uses AppsFlyer to find out which campaign or store listing led to an install. For this, AppsFlyer receives:
- the Android advertising ID, if your device settings allow apps to use it;
- your IP address;
- device data such as model, Android version, language and app version;
- the install and the times the app is opened;
- that a search was made and whether it found anything (never the search text), that a dictionary entry was opened (not which one), and, once, that a third entry was opened;
- the app's install ID (the same random ID Amplitude uses).
AppsFlyer may tell an advertising network that ran one of our campaigns, such as Google Ads, that an install, or one of the events above, came from that campaign, so the network can show the campaign to people likely to find the app useful. AppsFlyer also passes the campaign that led to an install to Amplitude, linked by the install ID, so that we can see which campaigns bring people who actually use the dictionary. We do not use any of this to show you ads, and the app contains no ads.
What the app does not collect
No name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos, files, precise location, or the text you type. There is no account to create.
Why we use this data
- Usage statistics, to understand how the app is used and decide what to improve.
- Crash reports, to find and fix errors.
- Install attribution, to know which campaigns and store listings bring people to the app.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process this data on the basis of our legitimate interest in keeping the app working, improving it and measuring our marketing (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). You can object at any time; see your choices.
Who processes the data
Amplitude, Sentry and AppsFlyer process the data on our behalf, under their own data processing terms, on servers in the United States or the European Union. Your data may therefore be transferred outside your country. Where the law requires it, such transfers rely on safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with anyone else except when the law requires it.
How long we keep it
Usage statistics, crash reports and attribution data are kept only as long as they are useful for the purposes above, and are then deleted or anonymised under each provider's retention settings. If you ask us to delete your data, we do it sooner; see data deletion.
Your choices and rights
- In the app. Turn off Settings > Privacy > Share usage statistics. The app then stops sending usage statistics to Amplitude and stops AppsFlyer. Crash reports are still sent, because without them we cannot fix errors.
- Advertising ID. In Android settings (usually Settings > Privacy > Ads, or Settings > Google > Ads) you can reset or delete your advertising ID. Once it is deleted, AppsFlyer cannot use it.
- Install ID. Clearing the app's data or reinstalling the app creates a new install ID.
- Stop all collection. Uninstalling the app stops all collection. The dictionary itself never needs a connection.
- Your rights under the GDPR. You can ask us for access to your data, to correct or delete it, or object to its use. Write to hello@roona.io; the data deletion page explains what to include. We answer within 30 days.
- Complaints. You can complain to the Latvian Data State Inspectorate (Datu valsts inspekcija), which supervises us, or to the data protection authority where you live.
Children
The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app and data about them was collected, write to us and we will delete it.
The website
roona.io is a set of static pages. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics, trackers or advertising, and loads nothing from other companies: fonts and images come from our own server. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes technical data such as IP addresses to deliver the pages and protect the site from abuse; we do not use it to analyse visitors.
Links to other websites, such as Google Play or the sources of the dictionary, are governed by those websites' own policies.
Security
Data sent by the app travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Access to the analytics, crash and attribution dashboards is limited to the people who work on the app.
Changes to this policy
When the app or this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will also say so in the app's release notes.
